Polish is a language that belongs to the West-Slavic group of the Slavic branch of the Indo-European languages.
With about 46 million speakers worldwide, Polish is currently the third-largest Slavic language, according to the number of speakers, after Russian and Ukrainian.
Polish is a recognised minority language in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and in Ukraine.
Of particular interest in the position of Polish in Lithuania, where the Poles form the largest minority, with 6.3% of the total population. There are also large Polish minorities in Germany, in Ukraine and in Belarus.
