Minority

Danes in Germany (Danes)

Description

The Danish minority in Germany lives in the region of Schleswig, in the town of Flensburg, the districts of North Friesland and Schleswig-Flensburg and the northern part of the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde. The Danish minority is speaking the Danish language. A revolt of the inhabitants of Schleswig-Holstein against Denmark in 1848 led to a war in 1864 between Denmark on one and Prussia and Austria on the other side. Since the time that Denmark lost the war and North and South Schleswig were annexed to Prussia, there has been a Danish minority in South Schleswig.

In the referendum of 1920 North Schleswig (the area of the former county of Sønderjylland) voted in favour of becoming part of Denmark, whereas the majority in South Schleswig voted for Germany. Since then the Danish minority has been a recognised minority with Denmark as its kin-state.
