The German minority in Hungary came into existance at first in the 12th and 13th century and later in the 17th and 18th century, as they were asked to settle areas in mainly the western part of what is Hungary now. In those days the number of Germans in Hungary was more than 1 million. After the Second World War many Hungarian Germans were deported to Germany and to the Soviet Union. Nowadays there are approximately 70,000 in Hungary who say they belong to the German minority, 35,000 of them are proficient in their mother tongue.
